From crabtree@dao.nrc.ca Thu Jun 10 12:43:02 1993 To: adass-list@dao.nrc.ca Subject: Abstract Submission for the ADASS meeting You have probably received a message containing a LaTeX template for the e-mail submission of abstracts to the upcoming ADASS conference. This message was mistakenly sent to the conference distribution list while testing the abstract submission system. I am sorry for any confusion which this may have caused. We will be making the conference announcement available sometime next week, but since everyone has now received my test abstract, I am making available the instructions for preparing ADASS abstracts. The following is an excerpt from the conference announcement and includes directions for obtaining the material for preparing ADASS abstracts. Dennis Crabtree ------------------------------- ABSTRACT INSTRUCTIONS The abstract template forms use the LaTeX markup language, but you do not need to know how to use LaTeX -- there are complete instructions and all the forms needed to prepare an abstract. Knowledge of a text editor is all that is required. If you can reach the Internet from your computer, you can retrieve the package using "anonymous FTP" from a computer named haida.dao.nrc.ca. Recipes for obtaining the package this way are included later on. If you can't retrieve the package yourself, you can send an email message to abs-request@dao.nrc.ca, and the package will be returned to you via email. When you have finished your abstract, mail the filled-in template to abstract@dao.nrc.ca. DO NOT SEND A PAPER COPY. We will make a reasonable attempt to solve problems in order to make this work for you, provided that you have made a good-faith effort to comply with our instructions. We cannot accept graphics yet. FILE TRANSFER INSTRUCTIONS The preferred method for retrieval is anonymous FTP on the Internet. The package is kept on a computer (host) called haida.dao.nrc.ca. The The files are located in pub/adass/abstracts. An ftp session might go like this: % ftp haida.dao.nrc.ca # you type this ... # Name (haida: ): anonymous # type "anonymous" Password: # type your e-mail address ... # ftp> cd pub/adass/abstracts # type these commands ftp> get README ftp> get adassab.sty ftp> get adassabfrm.tex ftp> get adassabsmp.tex ftp> get adassabins.txt ftp> bye # type this to quit If you see a message like "haida.dao.nrc.ca: unknown host", you'll need to use the numeric Internet address of haida.dao.nrc.ca. You should type this number on the FTP command line in place of "haida.dao.nrc.ca". The number is 134.87.150.9, so you would have to type % ftp 134.87.150.9 to start the FTP session. EMAIL REQUEST INSTRUCTIONS If you absolutely cannot get the package using the file transfer recipes given above, you can request that the package be sent to you as email. Send a simple message that says: send abstracts to abs-request@dao.nrc.ca. The files will be returned to you via email. Note that this is an Internet address. If your computer sends and receives email on Bitnet or DECNet (formerly SPAN) instead, you will have to route your request through a "gateway". EAST::"abs-request@dao.nrc.ca" (from DECNet/SPAN) abs-request@dao.nrc.ca (from Bitnet)
