From crabtree@dao.nrc.ca Fri Jul 30 12:34:42 1993 To: adass-list@dao.nrc.ca Subject: ADASS '93 This is a reminder that the EARLY REGISTRATION and ABSTRACT deadline for this year's ADASS meeting is August 6. The Birds-of-a-feather sessions which we know about at this time include: IDL Astronomy User's Group This BOF will consist of talks and discussions about the commercial language IDL and its use in astronomy. David Stern of Research Systems Inc. (RSI) will give an overview of recent changes and planned improvements to the IDL language. Wayne Landsman (Hughes/STX) will talk about recent developments in the IDL Astronomy User's Library. There will be several additional short talks describing specific applications of IDL in astronomy. -------- Electronic Publishing The electronic publishing BOF will give participants an opportunity to discuss the (rapid!) developments in this area and how these will affect authors, support personnel, and readers/subscribers. Several short overview presentations will be given to provide perspective on the issues surrounding the "formalized" literature. The conversation that follows can be expected to range among such topics as authors' changing responsibilities, the new possibilities for interacting with bodies of electronic texts, and technical issues (regarding display, interchange, format standards, etc.) affecting developers, maintainers, and users of software. -------- Installation and Maintenance of IRAF, STSDAS, and PROS This session is intended for site managers who install and maintain IRAF, STSDAS, and PROS. Interested users may also find the session useful. Representatives from the three software development groups will participate. There will be a short technical presentation followed by ample time for questions. Topics to be covered include common installation problems, configuring the device and environment tables for the local site (e.g., tapecap and .irafhosts), obtaining hardcopies from displayed images and graphics, and software development with IMFORT or SPP. Technical issues of concern to programmers such as GUI interfaces may also be covered if there is time and sufficient interest. -------- Information regarding the third annual conference on Astronomical Data Analysis Software and Systems (ADASS '93) may be obtained via anonymous ftp from ftp.dao.nrc.ca (134.87.150.9).
