Linux/IRAF Site Manager's Guide

2.1. Installing the System

The procedure for installing Linux/IRAF, plus other information specific to the Linux version of IRAF is documented in the README file in the Linux/IRAF distribution directory on the iraf.noao.edu ftp server (i.e. ftp://iraf.noao.edu/iraf/v210/LNUX/README). More detailed information on general installation procedures for IRAF on UNIX systems can be found in the Linux/IRAF Installation Guide, file linuxiraf.ps.Z in the distribution directory.

In short, an IRAF tape, network, or CD-ROM distribution is obtained and installed according to the instructions. The result is a full IRAF system, including both sources and executable binaries for the architectures to be supported. The system will have been modified to reflect the new IRAF root directory and should run, but will otherwise be a generic IRAF distribution. To get the most out of an IRAF installation it will be necessary to perform some of the additional steps outlined in the remainder of this document.
